Tableau was born at Stanford by PhD candidate Chris Stolte under Professor Pat Hanrahan , along with the third co-founder, Christian Chabot , who was in the room at Chris’ dissertation defense in 2003. Visual encoding allowed people to quickly understand data through visual comparison rather than the mental math needed for grids of numbers.
