Amazon has made a significant move in the global AI race by announcing a massive investment of up to $4 billion in the American AI startup, Anthropic. The investment is aimed at competing with an increasing number of rivals in the sector.

This partnership sees the e-commerce and cloud giant taking a minority stake in Anthropic, which has developed “Claude,” a chatbot that rivals ChatGPT, the popular AI tool by Californian startup OpenAI.

Both Anthropic and OpenAI are at the forefront of developing next-generation artificial intelligences, alongside tech giants like Google and Microsoft.

Generative AI, which involves creating original content based on vast datasets, has seen tremendous growth. It provides users with interfaces to ask questions or make requests for text, music, images, or code. Amazon aims to solidify its position in this booming sector, which is attracting attention not only from internet giants but also from investors.

While many companies are closely monitoring AI, they often rely on cloud giants like Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or Google for the necessary computing power.

These tech giants have thus decided to collaborate with AI developers. Earlier this year, Microsoft expanded its partnership with OpenAI through a multi-billion-dollar agreement. Anthropic has also attracted interest, with Google investing $300 million for a 10% stake in the California-based startup earlier this year.

Amazon’s developers and engineers will now be able to incorporate AI capabilities into Amazon’s various services and create new features for its customers, thanks to Anthropic’s models.

On the other hand, Anthropic will utilize AWS chips designed specifically for machine learning model creation, accelerating the development of future chatbot models.

Major tech companies are rapidly integrating generative AI features into their online software (such as office tools, coding, search engines, and email) to transform them into personal assistants.

Just recently, Amazon announced that its virtual assistant, Alexa, would be equipped with AI. Microsoft also revealed that it would incorporate OpenAI’s new generative AI interface into its Bing search engine last Thursday.

The race for AI supremacy is truly international. At the end of August, the Chinese internet giant Baidu launched its conversational robot, Ernie Bot, initially targeting the Chinese market.
