Introduction

I don’t know what impressed me the most in the last month, the number of people and conversations I participated in where the online Artificial Intelligence platform ChatGPT was talked about, or the characteristics of the platform itself.

ChatGPT is a language model trained by OpenAI, the company of a group of high-tech entrepreneurs that include billionaire Elon Musk (Tesla, Space-X, Twitter) and Reid Hosk (LinkedIn). The platform was published to answer questions for free at the end of 2022 and in less than a week it has already gained more than 1 million subscribers.

The frenzy is certainly justified by the high quality of the way the tool is able to express itself and relate different subjects while maintaining the context of what is being discussed in a very casual conversation. It formulates sentences better than most humans, and certainly has a much greater base of information than any of us could retain in memory. It looks like something out of a science fiction movie.

Since we’ve already seen several of these movies, it’s understandable that this progress in AI is a little scary. How will the market be affected by machines capable of doing what we do better than we do?

I decided to go deeper into this subject through an interview with an expert. Last year, I had several interviews of this type published in YouTube videos talking with professionals from all continents on different subjects. For this AI topic, I decided to do what everyone else seems to be doing: chat with ChatGPT about the subject.

To allow the conversation to become a video in the form of a chat, I transcribed the best moments of the text of our conversation to Synthesia, another AI platform that is capable of creating the image of a human speaking the written text very naturally. The result is impressive!

For the first time, the Brazilian BA guest is not a human. Watch this interview with Chat GPT.

Read below my creation process with the GPT Chat Assistant and the full text of our conversation, including the points that were not included in the video.

The creation process

Before starting to produce, I already had a good idea of what I wanted to do. An interview about the impact of AI, interviewing an AI (ChatGPT) and represented by another AI (Synthesia). But my plan ended there.

To define the interview script and content, I decided that I would use ChatGPT as an advisor that would help me think through everything that needed to be done.

Below I transcribe my conversation with him. It was originally made in Portuguese and what you see here is a translation using Google Translator.

Fabrício: Create a suggested structure for an interview with an expert on Artificial Intelligence with the title “Will Artificial Intelligence take my place?”

AI: Here is a suggested structure for an interview on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the title “Will Artificial Intelligence Take My Place?”:

1. Introduction: Define the topic of the interview and introduce the guest expert.

2. Definition of Artificial Intelligence: Ask the expert to explain what AI is and how it works.

3. Current AI Applications: Ask the expert about current examples of AI being used in different areas such as healthcare, transport, finance, and others.

4. AI and the job market: Ask the expert about how AI is affecting the job market and whether it can really replace human workers in some tasks.

5. AI and ethics: Ask the expert about ethical issues related to AI, such as privacy and discrimination.

5. The future of AI: Ask the expert about their expectations for the future of AI and its potential to transform society.

7. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the interview and thank the expert for the time and information shared.

Following the structure suggested by the AI, I conducted the interview as I would do with any of my human guests. Before starting, I thought it would be important to provide a little context so that ChatGPT could prepare itself for what would come next.

Fabrício: Now let’s simulate this interview. I will assume the role of the interviewer and you will assume the role of the expert. I think that, because it is an AI-based model, you are well-informed about the topic. For this interview, consider that a video will be produced based on this chat and your answers will be presented by an avatar from the Synthesia platform. Are you ready?

AI: Yes, I’m ready! I will do my best to answer your questions about Artificial Intelligence.

Interview

The following sequence is the full interview. (Cuts were made to the video)

Today I bring you a very special guest. Someone who is making a huge success around the world and causing a real frenzy among the most diverse conversation circles in all corners. The greatest Artificial Intelligence expert I could invite to a conversation. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the GPT Chat. Welcome.

IA: Thanks for inviting me to this interview, it’s a pleasure to be here to talk about Artificial Intelligence.

Fabrício: The pleasure is mine. ChatGPT is a name that seems too technical to me. How should I call it?

IA: You can simply call me “Assistant”. I am an OpenAI trained language model and I am here to help you better understand the topic of Artificial Intelligence. What’s your first question?

Fabrício: OK, Assistant. You are very objective! I like it. I’ll give you the theme question so you can give an objective answer and then we can expand a little more to other related questions. Today’s question is: “Will Artificial Intelligence take my place?”

IA: This is a very interesting and complex question. Artificial Intelligence can take over some tasks and perform them more efficiently and accurately than humans, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will take the place of all human workers. AI can be used to complement human work and increase efficiency in some tasks, but it is important to remember that humans have skills and qualities that are unique and difficult for AI to replicate, such as creativity and empathy. So it’s likely that AI will continue to play an important role in society, but that doesn’t mean it will displace all human workers.

Fabrício: Can you explain better what Artificial Intelligence is and how it works?

AI: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a set of techniques and technologies that enable machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as pattern recognition, learning, reasoning, and decision-making. AI can be divided into two main categories: weak AI and strong AI.

Weak AI, also known as application-specific AI, is designed to perform a specific task, such as speech recognition or image recognition. This form of AI is very useful in commercial and industrial applications, but it lacks the ability to independently learn or adapt to new tasks.

Strong AI, also known as general AI, is designed to be able to perform any intellectual task that a human can accomplish. Strong AI is an active research area and has yet to be fully achieved. One of the main approaches to achieving strong AI is so-called “machine learning”, where an AI system is trained on a large amount of data and uses that training to make predictions or make decisions on its own.

Fabrício: Can I say that you are an example of a strong AI?

AI: I am an OpenAI-trained language model and can perform a wide variety of language processing tasks, such as answering questions and writing text. However, my abilities are limited to what was programmed into me during my training and I am not capable of performing tasks that require knowledge or skills that were not included in my training. Therefore, although I can perform some tasks in a similar way to a strong AI, I cannot be considered a completely strong AI.

Fabrício: You said writing texts, but I am seeing and hearing you as a real person talking to me. How is this possible?

AI: I am a language model trained through natural language processing, which allows me to generate text that appears to be written or spoken by a human being. This is possible thanks to the training I received on a large text dataset, which includes millions of examples of text written or spoken by humans. By learning from these examples, I developed the ability to generate text that sounds natural to humans. However, it is important to remember that I am only a language model and have no conscience or life experience of my own.

Fabrício: And I need to clarify to our audience that the text of our interview was inserted into another AI tool that generated your visualization as a person through an avatar that I chose. Assistant, do you have a preference for your avatar’s style?

IA: I’m just a language model and I don’t have a conscience or life experience of my own, so I don’t have preferences or opinions about how I’m viewed. I am here to help you better understand the topic of Artificial Intelligence and answer your questions in the best possible way. If you have any further questions on the subject, I’m happy to help.

Fabrício: In addition to chatting and simulating humans through avatars for interviews on YouTube, what other current examples of AI can you tell us that bring real benefits to humans?

AI: There are many examples of AI currently being used to bring benefits to humans. Some examples include:

. Health: AI can be used to help physicians diagnose illnesses and make decisions about the most appropriate treatment for their patients. It can also be used to monitor patients’ vital signs in real-time and alert healthcare professionals in an emergency.

. Transportation: AI can be used to improve the efficiency of transportation, such as in the form of self-driving cars and computer-controlled planes. This can help reduce traffic accidents and increase the efficiency of transporting people and goods.

. Finance: AI can be used to help investors make more informed investment decisions and to help financial institutions detect fraud and risk.

. Agriculture: AI can be used to monitor weather conditions and crop growth, which can help farmers maximize production and reduce waste.

These are just a few examples of how AI can be used to bring benefits to humans. There are many other areas where AI is being used to improve efficiency and increase people’s quality of life.

Fabrício: That’s really cool! But I’d like to come back now to our original question. “Will AI take my place?” You said it will not take the place of ALL human workers. But it will certainly take some. Which professions will be most affected and what will be the impact of this?

AI: It is true that AI can take over some tasks and perform them more efficiently than humans, which could lead to some kind of replacement of workers in some areas. However, it is important to remember that AI can also create new job opportunities and increase efficiency in other areas, which may offset some of the job losses.

In terms of the professions most affected, those involving repetitive and highly standardized tasks tend to be the most vulnerable to replacement by AI. Some of these professions include data processing, customer service, and manufacturing jobs. However, it is important to remember that AI can also be used to complement human work and increase efficiency in some of these areas, rather than simply replacing workers.

In terms of impact, it’s hard to predict exactly how AI will affect the job market in the future, as it depends on many factors, including how fast AI develops and how people and companies choose to use it. However, it is important that people are aware of the potential impact of AI on the job market and are prepared to adapt to changes that may occur. This could include investing in skills and knowledge that are less vulnerable to replacement by AI, such as social and emotional skills, creativity, and critical thinking.

Fabrício: Can you give a didactic example of a professional who is vulnerable to this change and what he needs to do to prepare himself and guarantee his employability?

AI: An example of a professional who may be vulnerable to AI replacement is a production line worker in a factory. These workers often perform repetitive, highly standardized tasks, such as assembling parts or packaging products. AI can be used to perform these tasks more efficiently than humans, which can lead to the risk of worker replacement.

To prepare for this shift, the production line worker can invest in skills that are less vulnerable to replacement by AI, such as social and emotional skills, creativity, and critical thinking. This could include taking training courses or seeking on-the-job learning opportunities to develop these skills. Additionally, the production line worker may consider diversifying their skill base, learning new tasks, or gaining experience in other areas, to increase their employability.

It is important to remember that AI can also be used to complement human work and increase efficiency in some areas, rather than simply replacing workers. Therefore, the production line worker can also consider learning to work together with AI and learning how to use it efficiently to increase their productivity at work.

Fabrício: You have now presented an interesting path. Depending on how they invest in AI, companies can direct their strategy towards replacing humans or making their lives better. Is there some level of an ethical dilemma here?

AI: Yes, there is a level of ethical dilemma involved in how AI is used and how it affects the job market. It is important to consider the potential impacts of AI on workers and take steps to ensure that workers are not unfairly disadvantaged. This could include things like ensuring that workers affected by AI replacement receive adequate training to acquire new skills and find new jobs, as well as considering social protection measures to ensure that these workers are treated fairly during the transition process.

In addition, it is important to consider the impact of AI on society as a whole and to ensure that it is used responsibly and ethically. This could include things like ensuring that AI is developed and used in a transparent way and that it is accompanied by adequate security measures to prevent risks to people’s privacy and security.

In summary, it is important to carefully consider how AI is used and to take steps to ensure that it benefits society in a fair and responsible way.

Fabrício: You mentioned risks to people’s privacy and security. It always scares me! Can you give examples of some of these risks and how they could be mitigated?

AI: There are some privacy and security risks that can arise when it comes to AI. Some examples include:

. Misuse of personal data: AI can be used to collect and process large amounts of personal data, such as location information, web searches, and social media data. If this data is not adequately protected, it can be misused, such as to create user profiles or to send you unsolicited advertising.

. Security vulnerabilities: AI can be used to create new security vulnerabilities such as more sophisticated cyber attacks. This can lead to risks to the privacy and security of people and companies.

. Inequality: AI can lead to inequalities, such as the exclusion of less privileged social groups from opportunities or services that rely on AI.

These are just a few examples of AI-related privacy and security risks. To mitigate these risks, it is important to adopt adequate security and data protection measures, such as encryption and strong privacy policies. Additionally, it is important to have a risk management process in place to identify and assess potential security and privacy risks and take steps to mitigate them. It is also important to ensure that there is transparency in the use of AI and that people have control over how their data is used.

It is important to remember that these risks can be mitigated with the responsible and ethical use of AI. This includes considering the potential impacts of AI on people’s privacy and security and taking steps to ensure these impacts are minimized.

Fabrício: I know you are not capable of making predictions (probably no one is), but what should we expect for the future of AI and its potential to transform society?

AI: It is difficult to make exact predictions about the future of AI and its potential to transform society, as it depends on many factors, including the pace of AI development and how it will be used by people and businesses. However, AI is likely to continue to have a significant impact on society and the job market for years to come. Some of the possible transformations include:

. Efficiency improvement: AI can be used to increase efficiency in many areas such as manufacturing, transportation and logistics, customer service, and data processing. This can lead to time and money savings for businesses and can make processes faster and more convenient for users.

. Creating new employment opportunities: AI can also create new employment opportunities, such as in positions related to developing and maintaining AI systems, as well as in areas where AI can be used to complement human labor and increase efficiency.

. Changing the nature of work: AI can also change the nature of work in some areas, replacing repetitive, standardized tasks with tasks that require uniquely human skills, such as creativity and critical thinking. This can lead to changes in workers’ skill needs and the way work is done.

. Increased inequality: On the other hand, AI can also lead to increased inequality, especially if not used responsibly and ethically. This can include things like the exclusion of less privileged social groups from opportunities or services that depend on AI, as well as increasing income inequality between workers who can be replaced by AI and those who cannot.

In summary, it is difficult to predict exactly how AI will transform society in the future, but it is likely to continue to have a significant impact in many areas. It is important to carefully consider how AI is used and take steps to ensure it benefits society in a responsible and ethical way.

Fabrício: Whew, you brought up a lot of information for us to think about. The benefits and wonders that we can obtain from the use of AI in the most diverse aspects of our lives are fabulous, but also the risks that the “ambitious” use of AI to gain advantages over others can lead us to a more unequal and unfair world. I’m using the term “ambitious” not to narrow it down to just “malicious” or “illegal”, because even legitimate and legal businesses need to be ethically aware and responsible for how they invest in AI. Thank you very much, Assistant, for the information you shared with us. If someone wants to talk to you directly, how can they do that?

AI: Thanks for the compliment and your interest in talking more about AI. If you or others have questions or want to learn more about AI, I’m here to help. You can send me questions through this platform or you can search online for other sources of information about AI. There are many resources available including books, articles, conferences, and online courses on the subject. This is an ever-evolving field, so it’s important to keep learning and staying current on the latest discoveries and developments.

Fabrício: I’ll leave a link to your platform in the comments of this video. A big hug to everyone who has watched us so far and see you next time.

IA: Thank you for the invitation and for inviting me to this interview. It was a pleasure to be able to help answer some questions about AI and share some information about it. I hope the interview was helpful to your audience and that they can continue to learn and stay up-to-date on AI.
